Baseball topples Thiel

FT. PIERCE, Florida -- Back in action after a day off and with no lightning in sight, the Heidelberg University Baseball team upended Thiel College, 8-6. The Student Princes broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the ninth and improved to 6-3 on the season.

Heidelberg cranked out 16 hits on the afternoon, with Grant Bomer, Logan Winstead and Thomas McGuire collecting three apiece.

Bomer singled in the first and scored on a double inside the line in right by Winstead. McGuire followed with an RBI single up the middle.

After the Tomcats evened the contest with two in the bottom of the sixth, Heidelberg bounced back in the top of the seventh. Garrett Labeau started with a single to right, then raced around the bases on another double by Winstead. Standing on third after an error, Winstead scored on a sacrifice fly by McGuire. With the bases empty, Logan Walpole doubled and scored on a base hit by pinch hitter Simeon Betts. Thiel scored twice in the bottom of the frame, cutting the HU lead to 5-4 through seven.

Bomer doubled to lead off the eighth and later scored on a single by Winstead. Momentum was short lived, as Thiel tied the game at six with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth.

In the ninth, Bomer doubled home Sam Schneider with one out to give HU a 7-6 lead. A throwing error allowed the Student Princes to scratch across another run.

Down 8-6, the Tomcats went 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Starter Logan Franz received a no decision, despite a strong start. He allowed two runs (both unearned) in six innings. He struck out six and limited Thiel to four hits. Jasper Daniels received the win and Daniel Bowser earned the save.

Heidelberg is back on the diamond on Wednesday. The single game with Gettysburg is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
