CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team swept a pair of games on Friday at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe. HU beat Hiram, 10-4, in the opener, then used a seven-run fourth to propel themselves to an 11-8 win over Albion.
Heidelberg improved to 4-1 on the season.
GAME ONE: HEIDELBERG 10-15-2 HIRAM 4-7-4
The Terriers broke out for a three-run top of the first, but Heidelberg answered with a pair.
Sam Schneider was hit by a pitch and Garrett Labeau walked.
Logan Winstead drove in Schneider with a base hit to left. After an infield single by
Grant Bomer,
Logan Walpole drove in a run with a groundout.
HU tied the game in the second on a single by Schneider. Then, in the third, a single by
Brayden Tucker drove in Bomer, who led off the frame with a double.
Hiram tied the game in the fourth, but the resilient Student Princes responded with two in the bottom of the fourth. HU loaded the bases on a Winstead walk sandwiched between singles by Labeau and Bomer. Walpole followed with a sac fly, and Winstead scored as the result of a throwing error on a stolen base by Bomer.
Up 6-4, Heidelberg scored insurance runs in the seventh. A single by
Thomas McGuire bounced a leadoff single through the left side, then moved around the bases on a Tucker hit-by-pitch and a
Simeon Betts walk.
Braedy Limke came through with a sacrifice fly, then an errant throw on a pickoff allowed another run to score.
In the eighth, McGuire launched a two-run homer to left center.
Starter Jameson Oleson earned the win with 6.0 innings of work. He fanned four and gave up four runs (three earned).
Aidan Cummings worked two scoreless frames and
Shane Jones sealed the win with a scoreless ninth.
GAME TWO: BERG 11-12-3 ALBION 8-11-3
Limke and Schneider drew walks to start off the top of the first. They scored easily on a double down the right field line by Bomer.
After Albion halved the 'Berg lead in the bottom of the third, HU battled back in a big way. An error and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Limke doubled home a pair, then Schneider walked to reload the bases. Following a passed ball, Labeau and Bomer singled in runs.
Jack McKelley, a noted Pete Weber historian, capped the seven-run outburst with a double to center that scored two.
The Britons scored three in the fourth and one in the sixth, but still trailed, 9-5. Albion added two more in the eighth, cutting the deficit down to two.
Heidelberg tacked on two insurance runs with two outs in the ninth. Betts reached on an infield single and sprinted to third on a double to center by Limke. Schneider walked to load the bases before Labeau delivered a much-needed two-run single to right. Albion would add one in the ninth, but got no closer.
Five Student Princes saw action on the mound, with starter
Henry Mates going 3.1 innings.
