Berg clinches OAC Tournament spot with win over Baldwin Wallace

BEREA – The Heidelberg Men's Basketball team held on for an 89-81 victory at Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday, officially securing a spot in the six-team OAC Tournament next week. The Student Princes finished with six players in double figures, led by a 23-point outburst from Jarveil Gainey

Gainey was a crowd-pleasing 6-for-7 from beyond the arc, and tallied a game-high nine rebounds. Marcos Vazquez contributed 18 points and six assists. Markell Johnson-Nichols and Riley Gossom both finished with 13.

The Student Princes quieted the crowd inside Ursprung Gymnasium with a 14-2 run to open the game. HU led by as many as 18 in the first half and took a 54-39 lead into halftime.

Down by 14 with less than nine minutes to play, BW tried to chip away at the deficit, but only got as close as six. The Tricolor hit 10-of-12 from the line in the final 70 seconds, preventing any sort of BW rally.

Heidelberg moved to 13-11 overall, 7-8 in the OAC. All six tournament teams have been decided, with Mount Union and Otterbein securing first round byes. Ohio Northern has secured the No. 3 seed and a home game in the quarterfinals. Muskingum is also sitting at 7-8 overall, but holds a head-to-head tiebreaker with The Berg. Wilmington is the sixth team in the tourney -- with Marietta, BW and Capital mathematically eliminated.

Heidelberg wraps up the regular season at home on Saturday. They'll welcome Capital into Seiberling Gymnasium on Senior Day. A 'Berg win coupled with a Muskingum loss to Otterbein on Saturday would propel the Student Princes into the No. 4 seed and a home tournament game.

Tipoff for the regular season finale is slated for 1 p.m.
