TIFFIN -- Coming off their best win of the season, knocking off No. 4 Mount Union on Wednesday, the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team did not overlook the pesky Wilmington College Quakers on Saturday. Instead, the Student Princes buckled down and held on for a 92-90 win inside Seiberling Gymnasium. Heidelberg has won four straight.
All five starters finished in double-figures for the well-balanced Student Princes.
Trey Killens led the way with 19 points. Â
Marcos Vazquez added 16 points and eight assists.
Brady Bosma and
Markell Johnson-Nichols had 13 points apiece, with the latter adding in a game-high seven boards.
Riley Gossom had 10 points.Â
At the first media timeout, the Quakers had built a 15-7 advantage. Heidelberg erased the deficit over the next four minutes with a 13-2 spurt, keyed by 3-pointers from
Jarveil Gainey and Johnson-Nichols, and capped by a three-point play from Gossom.Â
With five minutes left in the half, HU led by 11. But less than two minutes later, Wilmington had cut the lead down to one. Â The Student Princes closed the half on a 7-0 run, with the final four points coming from crowd-favorite
Abba Lawal. HU led, 55-47
An acrobatic tip-in and-one from WC's Ben Golan with 13:45 left in the game gave Wilmington a 62-60 lead, setting off a wildly entertaining end of the game. There were a total of 10 lead changes in the final 13 minutes. Of the final 13 minutes, there was a nearly nine-minute span where neither side led by more than three. Â
Tied at 84 with 2:15 to play, Johnson-Nichols gave HU a lead with a layup in traffic, was fouled, and buried the free throw for a critical three-point play. Following a Wilmington miss, Killens added a layup to extend the lead to five.Â
Wilmington closed to within one at 89-88 in the final minute, but Vazquez delivered a back-breaking fadeaway jumper late in the shot clock to build the 'Berg lead back to three. After a timeout, Wilmington misfired on a perimeter pass and gave the ball back to the Tricolor.Â
HU would ice the game with a foul shot from Johnson-Nichols. Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: Heidelberg shot 55.6% from the floor and an even 50% beyond the arc … The teams split the rebounds evenly, with both sides grabbing 31 … Led by Gainey's eight points, HU held a 21-9 edge in bench scoring …
