Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Rain doesn't dampen Spike Night vibes

TIFFIN -- The venue changed, but Spike Night Under the Lights was a massive success for the Heidelberg University Volleyball team. Though it had barely rained all of September, a rainy forecast pushed the four-school, three-match event from Hoernemann Stadium into Seiberling Gymnasium. The rain, however, did not dampen the enthusiasm for volleyball from a massive Seneca County crowd.

More than 1,000 people crammed into Seiberling -- first to watch the JV and Varsity teams from Columbian and Calvert High Schools battle. Heidelberg hosted Findlay in the nightcap, with the Oilers emerging with a 3-0 sweep.

While all of the money from ancillary fundraisers continues, the gate receipts from the evening grossed over $6,000 -- with the proceeds going to FACT (Financial Assistance for Cancer Treatment) of Seneca County.

"It was a fantastic evening for our entire community," said Heidelberg Head Coach Jason Miller, whose four daughters all played -- Hannah for Findlay, Olivia for Heidelberg, and Emily and Gracie for Calvert. "I'm disappointed the weather didn't cooperate, but it was still a spectacle to behold."

Calvert's JV won, 2-0, before their varsity upended Columbian, 3-1.

Findlay, ranked No. 23 in Division II, showed their speed and firepower throughout the evening en route to the 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 victory.

Reigning OAC Player of the Week Sophia Simon had a team-high nine kills, with a .471 attack clip. Kaitlyn Uffman had eight kills. Olivia Miller led HU with 15 assists, while adding 11 digs. Grace Dohanyos picked up 15 digs.

Heidelberg visits Bluffton this weekend for three matches. HU faces Hanover on Friday before squaring off with Bluffton and Adrian on Saturday.
