Softball Splits Season Ending Series

ADA -- The Heidelberg University Softball team picked up a season finale split at Ohio Northern on Friday. The host Polar Bears took game one 10-2, but the Berg bashed their way to victory in the nightcap, winning 15-8.

GAME ONE: ONU 10-15-0, BERG 2-6-1

Heidelberg got off to a strong start, plating two runs in the top of the first. Sammie Trimpey and Gabbie Stallbaum each reached base and came around to score, with Ellie Tressler and Emma Dean providing the RBIs.

Tressler finished game one at the plate with two hits, including a double and a sacrifice fly. She drove in one to give Berg the early lead.

Stallbaum reached base twice, scoring a run and recording a hit and a walk.

Sammie Trimpey collected two hits and scored once while also stealing a base.

GAME TWO: BERG 15-20-3, ONU 8-17-2

Heidelberg's offense exploded for 15 runs on a season high 20 hits in a dominant win under the lights in Ada.

The Berg wasted no time grabbing momentum, tacking on three runs in the top of the first. Sammie Trimpey singled and promptly stole second, setting the table. Gabbie Stallbaum ripped a double to right center to score Trimpey. Emma Dean followed with a double of her own to left center, bringing in Stallbaum. After AbbIe Marshall reached base, Leah Arnett crushed a triple to the gap in left center, chasing home another run.

In the second, Heidelberg batted around and posted five more runs. Lillie Robeson led off with a single, and an error on a fielder's choice put two on. Trimpey laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit to load the bags. Stallbaum was intentionally walked, forcing in a run. Ellie Tressler then drew a walk to bring in another. Dean delivered again, this time with a two-run single into the outfield. A foul fly from Marshall allowed Tressler to tag and score the fifth run of the frame, putting the Student Princes up 8-3.

ONU answered with two in the bottom of the second and one more in the third, but the Student Princes kept the bats warm.

In the third, Heidelberg pushed across four more. Robeson singled and pinch runner Hannah Hashman was driven home by Stallbaum, who singled up the middle. Tressler followed with a single to left to plate another, and Dean drove in two more with a single to center, giving her five RBI on the night and extending the lead to 12-5.

The fifth inning added two more. Tressler doubled and scored on a single by Arnett. Later in the inning, Robeson singled up the middle to score Dean, her fourth hit of the game.

In the sixth, Heidelberg added one last insurance run. Trimpey singled and moved up on a base hit by Stallbaum. With two outs, Marshall reached on an error that allowed Trimpey to score her fourth run of the game.

Taylor Forrest earned her 10th win of the season, gutting out three innings and keeping ONU from building a big rally despite traffic on the bases. She struck out two and allowed just two earned runs.

Dean led the offensive outburst, going 4-for-5 with five RBI. Robeson also tallied four hits and an RBI. Stallbaum finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two driven in. Tressler reached base three times, scored three runs, and extended her RBI streak. Trimpey crossed the plate four times and stole her 26th base, good for a perfect 26-26 on the year.
