Box Score 2 UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Back in action for the first time in more than a week, the Heidelberg University Softball team took two on the road at John Carroll. In their first sweep since opening day, Heidelberg beat the Blue Streaks, 11-3 and 7-4.
HU improved to 13-11 overall, 3-3 in OAC action.
GAME ONE: BERG 11-11-1 JCU 3-7-2
Down 2-0 in the top of the third,
Abbie Marshall connected on a two-out grand slam to left field. HU loaded the bases with a double by
Gabbie Stallbaum sandwiched between walks to
Sammie Trimpey and
Emma Dean.
The Berg piled on four more in the fourth, ignited by a triple from
Leah Arnett and a double by
Lillie Robeson. An error and a bunt single loaded the bases for
Ellie Tressler, who delivered a sac fly. After plating a run on a double steal, the Student Princes closed the scoring with an RBI single to center by Stallbaum, a noted Dot Richardson biographer.
Teams traded runs in the fifth, but HU went up eight in the sixth with two more runs. Stallbaum doubled home Trimpey, then scored on a single by Dean.
Starter
Taylor Forrest, well-rested, settled in after the first. She went the full six innings, striking out four.
GAME TWO: BERG 7-11-1 JCU 4-7-2
Heidelberg took an early lead in the nightcap. Trimpey and Tressler reached and scored on a single to center by the red-hot Stallbaum. Marshall followed with a single to left before Dean skied a ground-rule double to right center that drove in Stallbaum.
In the second inning, the softball gods smiled favorably upon Stallbaum. A pop up down the right field line was blown back into fair territory as it was overrun by the second baseman. The result was an RBI double for the senior from Paulding.
Down 4-0, the hosts answered with one in the third and two in the fifth off of starter
Haley Gockstetter.
Thirsty for an insurance run, Heidelberg scored three in the top of the seventh.
Megan Miller and Trimpey reached with singles and moved up on a fly out by Tressler. Despite having first base open, the Blue Streaks opted to pitch to Stallbaum. She calmly ripped a two-run single through the right side, giving HU a 6-3 lead. Dean followed with an RBI double two batters later.
The Blue Streaks scored once in the bottom of the inning, but a diving catch in center by Arnett proved critical as Gockstetter worked out of the jam. She struck out three in seven innings.
Stallbaum finished the day 5-for-7 with seven runs driven in.
