Box Score 2 NORTH MANCHESTER, Indiana -- In their final non-conference doubleheader of the season, the Heidelberg University Softball team picked up a sweep of host Manchester University. The Student Princes won the opener, 9-6, then won the nightcap, 2-1. In the process, senior slugger
Gabbie Stallbaum tied the program's single-season home run record with her 12th round-tripper of the campaign.
Heidelberg improved to 18-18 overall.
Emma Dean had five hits and drove in three. In addition to her home run, Stallbaum drew six walks.
GAME ONE: BERG 9-9-2 MANCH 6-11-1
Stallbaum took a two-out walk in the first, then sprinted home on a double up the power alley in left center by
Emma Dean. After moving to third on a passed ball, Dean scored on a single to right by
Ellie Tressler.
Up 2-0, Heidelberg tacked on another run in the second.
Aubrey Conklin was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double by
Jade Torres.
Stallbaum's record-tying bomb was a leadoff, opposite field blast in the fifth. Now with 12 homers on the season, she tied herself (2024) and Ashley Foust (2006) atop the single-season home run list.
Lillie Robeson increased HU's advantage in the sixth, singling home Conklin and
Sammie Trimpey with a base hit up the middle. Later in the inning, Dean drove in pinch runner Jae'Nye Witherspoon with a single. Manchester scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the inning.
HU added insurance runs in the seventh, scoring runs with a hit from Trimpey and a bases loaded walk by Stallbaum.
Down 9-1, the Spartans made things interesting with five runs, but ultimately fell short.
Haley Gockstetter (8-8) earned the win in the circle with 6.1 innings of work. She struck out three.
Taylor Forrest earned the save.
GAME TWO: BERG 2-4-3 MANCH 1-5-2
Trimpey reached on an error in the first inning of the second game, and promptly stole second -- her 22nd of the season. She scored on a single by Dean.
Tied at 1 in the third, the red-hot Dean singled to right and sent Stallbaum to third. An errant throw allowed Stallbaum to score the go-ahead run.
The slim advantage was plenty for Forrest (W, 8-7). She allowed one unearned run in a full seven innings, striking out four and limiting MU to five hits.
