TIFFIN -- In an unusual fashion, the Heidelberg University Baseball team walked off with a sweep over visiting Otterbein University on a sunny-but-chilly Saturday in Peaceful Valley. Heidelberg won the opener, 11-6, then used a bases loaded catcher's interference to win the nightcap in 12 innings, 5-4.
Heidelberg improved to 14-16 overall, 6-6 in the OAC.Â
GAME ONE: BERG 11-11-3 Â OTT 6-9-2
Down 2-0 after a half inning, Heidelberg answered with a run in the bottom of the first.
Theo Walsh was hit by a pitch and scored on a double to left by
Braedy Limke. Â
In the second, Walsh singled in two runs to give HU a 3-2 lead. The Berg added another on a groundout from Limke.Â
Andrew Pokley doubled in two with two outs in the fourth, putting the hosts up 6-2. Â
The Cardinals scored three in the fifth and tied the game with a run in the sixth.
Heidelberg broke the tie in the seventh with a three-run rally sparked by a leadoff double from
Logan Walpole. Mr.
Cort Kramer laid a sac bunt to third and reached on an error before
Kyle Krummen sent a sac fly to left. Walsh tripled down the right field line, scoring Kramer.
Sam Schneider closed the scoring with a sac fly to center.
Walpole and Kramer drove in two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Â
Tyler Verdin picked up the win in relief of starter Dylan Matuszak. Verdin threw 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits.Â
GAME TWO: BERG 5-10-1 Â OTT 4-8-4 (12 innings)
Otterbein scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth, taking a 3-0 lead. Â
Heidelberg battled back in the sixth. Â Schneider walked and motored to third on a base hit by Pokley. With two down,
Logan Winstead served a double down the right field line to score two.Â
Down 3-2, HU loaded the bases in the seventh. A four-pitch walk to Schneider tied the game and a bloop single by Limke brought in the go-ahead run.Â
After Otterbein tied the game in the eighth, the score remained tied until the12th. Heidelberg walked off without the aid of a base hit, loading the bases with an error, an intentional walk, and a hit batter. With two outs, Walsh -- three weeks removed from scoring on a walk-off, four-base error -- swung at the first pitch. His bat hit the glove of the catcher and, by rule, was awarded first base which forced in the game-winning run.Â
Corbin Caplan started and gave up one run in four innings.
Corey Brafford also threw four innings, allowing three.
Payton Moser and
Orion Kroah each worked two scoreless innings.Â
