FORT PIERCE, Florida -- In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and weird things happening when Student Princes and Flying Dutchmen meet on a baseball diamond in Florida. Two games in 2023 saw the Heidelberg University Baseball team rally for three 10th-inning runs to beat Lebanon Valley College, 18-3, a mere five days after being no hit by the Pennsylvania school. In 2022, HU let a late lead slip away for a loss, but rebounding with an 18-3 bludgeoning two days later.
In 2025, The Berg held an 8-2 lead through 3.5 innings, but the Flying Dutchmen rallied with multi-run outbursts in the fourth, seventh and eighth. The result was an 11-9 loss for the Student Princes, who are still searching for their identity early in the season.
Down 1-0 in the top of the second,
Sam Schneider put HU on top with a two-run double to left center that scored
Logan Walpole and
Kyle Krummen.
In the third, RBI groundouts by
Thomas McGuire and Krummen padded the 'Berg lead.
Up 4-2, Schneider doubled to lead off the fourth. After
Kyle Mottice singled,
Braedy Limke plated Schneider with a groundout. Unsatisfied, HU added runs with hits by
Garrett LaBeau, McGuire and Walpole. The four-run fourth gave the Student Princes a six-run cushion.
Lebanon Valley cleaved the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning and the game remained 8-5 into the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, Limke drove in
Chase Dussel with a double to left center. Undeterred, the Flying Dutchmen patiently tied the game in the bottom of the frame -- taking advantage of three walks and a hit batsmen.
Lebanon Valley broke the 9-9 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs, then held off the Student Princes in the ninth.
LaBeau and Schneider had three hits apiece.
Heidelberg faces reigning national champion Misericordia again on Thursday, looking to avenge Saturday's loss. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
