Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Heidelberg University Softball team moved to day two of The Spring Games, taking on MAC power Eastern and AMCC foe Pitt.-Greensburg to move to 3-1 on the year.
Game 1: Eastern 5, Heidelberg 1
For seven innings, Heidelberg battled against Eastern, but a tough third inning proved to be the difference. The Eagles capitalized on defensive miscues to break the game open with a four-run frame, scoring twice on clean hits and twice more on errors to build on their lead.
The Berg would respond in the sixth when Sammie Trimpey reached base and then moved into scoring position. With one out, Emma Dean lifted a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Trimpey home for Heidelberg's only run of the game.
Despite strong efforts at the plate from Jade Torres, who roped a double, and Gabbie Stallbaum, who reached base twice, Heidelberg couldn't complete the comeback. Taylor Forrest battled in the circle, tossing six innings and allowing just three hits, but five walks and a pair of errors proved the difference in the 5-1 defeat.
Game 2: Heidelberg 10, Pitt.-Greensburg 2
After a slow start earlier in the day, Heidelberg's offense erupted for ten runs, powered by Ellie Tressler's two-home-run performance and Sammie Trimpey's perfect day at the plate.
The Berg wasted no time jumping ahead in the first inning, plating four runs to seize early control. Sammie Trimpey led off with a single up the middle, and after Ellie Tressler worked a deep count, she turned on a fastball and crushed a two-run homer to left-center, immediately giving Heidelberg a 2-0 lead. In front of a hype Heidelberg crowd, Gabbie Stallbaum kept the rally going with a double into the right-field gap. A groundout from Aubrey Conklin pushed Stallbaum to third, and she soon scored on a Pitt.-Greensburg miscue. Heidelberg tacked on another run in the first when Olivia Rompf showcased her speed, lacing a triple down the right-field line, helping Jade Torres score to make it 4-0.Â
In the second inning,
Gabbie Stallbaum ripped a single, and advanced to second on the throw, bringing
Leah Arnett home to extend Heidelberg's lead to 5-0.
Pitt.-Greensburg responded with a two-run third inning, but Haley Gockstetter took control from there, shutting down any further scoring opportunities for the Bobcats. The freshman pitcher scattered eight hits over 4.1 strong innings, limiting the opposition while her offense prepared to put the game away.
With the game still within reach at 5-2, Heidelberg's offense erupted for five more runs in the sixth to put it away. Leah Arnett jumpstarted the rally with a triple to right field, but was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice during Sammie Trimpey's bunt single. Trimpey, showing aggressive baserunning, advanced to third. This set the stage for Ellie Tressler, who blasted a two-run home run to center (her second of the game and fourth of the young season) to extend the lead to 7-2. Gabbie Stallbaum kept the momentum rolling with a double to right-center, eventually scoring on a defensive miscue to make it 8-2.
Heidelberg continued to apply pressure as Emma Dean came off the bench and roped a pinch-hit double to left-center, putting two runners in scoring position. Megan Miller then worked a bases-loaded walk, bringing home another unearned run. Olivia Rompf capped off the explosive inning with a two-run single to left, pushing the lead to 10-2 to secure the 6 inning win for the Berg.
The team gets an off day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday, March 5. The Berg will battle Illinois College at 9:00 a.m. and Aurora University at 2:00 p.m. Both games are at DiamondPlex in Winter Haven, FL.
