Box Score 2 TIFFIN -- The Queens of the Split, the Heidelberg University Softball team, was back at it on Tuesday -- taking the second game of a twinbill with visiting Adrian College. Adrian battered Heidelberg in the opener, 12-1, in five innings. Heidelberg returned the favor in the nightcap, 11-3, also in five innings.
With Ohio Athletic Conference action slated to start this Saturday, Heidelberg moved to 10-8 -- having split its last eight doubleheaders after a season-opening sweep. Adrian is now 12-6.
GAME ONE: ADRIAN 12-10-1 HEIDELBERG 1-5-5
Timely hitting by Adrian and a boatload of errors by Heidelberg led to a run-rule win for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs pounced on the Student Princes in the first two innings, building a commanding 9-0 lead. Heidelberg scratched a run across in the bottom of the second with a base hit by
Leah Arnett.
Adrian added two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
GAME TWO: HEIDELBERG 11-9-1 ADRIAN 3-7-3
Timely hitting by Heidelberg and a boatload of errors by Adrian led to a run-rule win for the Bergdogs.
Pitching in front of a busload of her high school teammates, former Norwalk Trucker
Haley Gockstetter looked sharp for the second straight start -- and unlike her tough-luck 1-0 loss at Alma, this time, Gockstetter received offensive support.
Ellie Tressler and
Gabbie Stallbaum drew one-out walks in the first before a single from
Abbie Marshall loaded the bases.
Emma Dean was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run.
Lillie Robeson pushed another run across with a sacrifice fly.
Aubrey Conklin delivered the biggest hit of the inning, scoring a single to center that drove in two.
Up 4-0 in the second, Stallbaum tripled to right field, driving in Arnett.
Adrian scored once in the third, but Gockstetter worked out of a major jam and avoided further damage. The Bulldogs added another run in the fourth.
Ahead 5-2, Heidelberg scored six unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. Tressler reached on an error and Marshall walked.
Emma Dean singled to left, driving in Tressler. After Robeson reached on an error, Conklin hit a sacrifice fly. Dean, running the bases like a boss, scored on a passed ball as
Sammie Trimpey took ball four.
Jade Torres reloaded the bases with another walk, only for Arnett to unload them with a triple into the right field corner.
Running catches by Torres and Stallbaum in the outfield limited Adrian to one run in the fifth. Gockstetter (W, 4-2) struck out the final batter of the game to secure the run rule -- her fourth of the game.
