Matusak Shines in Doubleheader

FORT PIERCE, Florida -- The Heidelberg University baseball team split a doubleheader versus Elizabethtown College on Sunday, winning the first game 1-0, and losing game two by a score of 3-0.

The first game, which was scheduled for seven innings, resulted in a pitching masterclass by Heidelberg graduate student Dylan Matusak. The Student Princes' starter hurled a complete game shutout on 118 pitches, striking out 11 Blue Jay batters in the process.

Elizabethtown was also impressive on the mound, as starter Quinten Perilli fanned six through 6.2 innings pitched.

Matusak stranded eight baserunners, including escaping a  bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh. He allowed just four hits.

Cort Kramer led off the bottom half of the inning with a base hit through the right side, and advanced to second on a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Thomas McGuire. Senior Kyle Mottice came in to pinch run, then advanced to third on an error by the Blue Jays' left fielder. A wild pitch sealed the deal for Heidelberg, as they walked it off by a score of 1-0.

After a 30 minute lunch break, the teams returned for a full nine innings of action.

Senior Nick Lavelle got the nod for game two, making his fourth career start (his first since 2023).

After allowing an early run, Lavelle cruised through the Blue Jays into the sixth inning; a lead-off hit batter followed by a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt ended his day, as he gave up two runs off of six hits.

Senior Orion Kroah entered in stylish fashion with a beautiful pickoff move to get the runner at first. He would pitch the final 2.2 innings giving up one unearned run, one walk, and one hit.

Heidelberg stranded all three runners that reached base over the last three innings.

Heidelberg returns to action on Monday, taking on Susquehanna University at 10 am. The contest is the fourth of eight in the Sunshine State for the Student Princes.
