Box Score 2 TIFFIN -- On a picturesque day in Tiffin, the Heidelberg University Softball team salvaged a split with Albion College. HU couldn't climb out on an early hole in a 15-11 loss in the opener, but held on for a 7-6 win in the night cap.
The offense was led by
Abbie Marshall and
Gabbie Stallbaum, who both had five extra base hits and seven RBI.
GAME ONE: ALBION 15-13-1 BERG 11-13-3
The Britons piled up a nine-spot in the top of the first, using five hits, two errors, three walks and two hit batters.
Forced to play catch-up for the entire game, Heidelberg answered with four in the bottom of the tumultuous first inning.
Gabbie Stallbaum and
Abbie Marshall had back-to-back doubles and
Lillie Robeson dropped in a single.
Teams traded runs in the second before Marshall hit her first collegiate home run -- on her birthday -- that got HU to within four.
Stallbaum doubled with two outs in the fourth, plating two more -- and inching Heidelberg even closer. The Britons, however, answered with three unearned runs in the fifth.
Heidelberg closed to within four at 13-9 with an RBI groundout from
Jade Torres in the fifth. In the sixth, Stallbaum launched her third home run of the season to left. Marshall and
Emma Dean followed with doubles, and HU trailed 13-11.
Albion pushed two insurance runs across in the seventh before stranding two in the bottom of the inning.
GAME TWO: BERG 7-8-2 ALBION 6-11-2
Stallbaum hit a triple in the bottom of the first, scoring
Ellie Tressler from first. Marshall followed with a double to right center, and HU led, 2-0.
Albion scored four times in the second, taking a 4-2 lead.
In the third,
Leah Arnett singled and Stallbaum walked. Marshall uncorked another birthday bomb, launching a three-run home run to left center -- giving HU a 5-4 lead.
Stallbaum blasted her second home of the day in the fifth, a two-run shot to right center. The pair of long balls brought Stallbaum's career total to 23.
The Britons tightened the game with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Kamryn Rastigue closed out the game, picking up her second save of the season.
Haley Gockstetter (3-1) earned the victory, throwing 5.2 innings.
