Box Score 2 BLUFFTON -- Back in Ohio for their first games up north, the Heidelberg University Softball team settled for a disappointing split at Bluffton University. The Student Princes won the opener, 10-3, and let a big lead slip away in the seventh inning of a 7-6 loss in the night cap.
Freshmen
Sammie Trimpey and
Abbie Marshall both logged four hits, with Marshall adding five RBI.
GAME ONE: HEIDELBERG 10-8-2 BLUFFTON 3-9-2
Heidelberg wasted little time jumping on Bluffton.
Sammie Trimpey led off with a bunt single before walks to
Leah Arnett and
Ellie Tressler loaded the bases.
Gabbie Stallbaum sent a sharp liner up the middle that was somehow snared by the pitcher, but an errant throw on an attempt to double up Tressler allowed Trimpey to race home. After a walk to
Emma Dean reloaded the bases,
Abbie Marshall smoked a single up the middle, plating two. After reloading the bases yet again with a walk, HU pushed the fourth run across when
Jade Torres was hit by a pitch.
The Student Princes carried the 4-0 lead into the third. There, Bluffton scored twice, halving the HU lead. Bluffton had a chance to do more damage in the fourth, but reliever
Kamryn Rastigue worked out of a jam, aided by close play at the plate where Tressler applied the tag on a throw from
Carmen Moore at third.
The Berg added two in the top of the fifth, which began with walks to Tressler and Stallbaum. Following a bunt single from
Lillie Robeson, Marshall rocketed a single to deep left center that scored one. A wild pitch allowed another run to cross, and HU led 6-2.
Up 6-3 in the top of the sixth, Heidelberg put another four-spot on the board -- all with two outs. With Tressler on second, Stallbaum pulled an RBI single down the right field line. After a walk, Marshall's big game continued with a two-run double to right center, scoring
Rachel Adams and
Karissa Smith. Marshall scored on a misplay by the Beaver defense.
Rastigue earned the win -- the first of her career -- with four innings of work. She walked four, but limited Bluffton to one hit.
GAME TWO: BLUFFTON 7-12-1 HEIDELBERG 6-8-1
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Tressler and Stallbaum gave Heidelberg a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Student Princes padded the lead in the second with a squeeze play and a sacrifice fly.
Up 4-0, HU added two more in the third. Dean walked and Adams, pinch-running, moved to second on a passed ball. Marshall singled, and a misplayed ball allowed Adams to race home.
Later in the inning, Moore dropped a single down the left field line.
Bluffton scored once in the fifth before exploding for a jaw-dropping six-run seventh inning. Five of the runs were unearned, aided by two walks and a hit batter.
