TIFFIN -- Slow starts in both halves doomed the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team in an 84-58 loss to Ohio Northern University on Wednesday afternoon. The game, originally set for 7 p.m., was moved up to a 4 p.m. start because of an impending ice storm.
Emily Valencia led Heidelberg with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Chloe Gilbert and
Morgan Altenburger each had 12 points.
The Polar Bears took a 12-0 lead, but
Ashley Ballard -- in her return from an injury -- hit a 3-pointer and a jumper late in a shot clock to breathe some life into The Berg. A 10-1 run for the hosts tightened the game in the first quarter. ONU led after one, 21-15.
Both teams struggled offensively early in the second, but the Polar Bears headed to the locker room with a 36-29 lead.
The visitors heated up in the third, shooting 63.2% from the floor and hitting four 3-pointers. ONU maintained their pressure in the fourth, emerging with the 26-point win.
Heidelberg hosts Mount Union on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the home finale. Prior to the contest, the Student Princes will honor five seniors --
