TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team lost on day two of the Ron Linhart Memorial Tournament, falling to John Carroll University, 103-88. The Student Princes struggled to break the JCU full court press, leading to 29 points off turnovers.
Markell Johnson-Nichols led the Student Princes with 24 points and nine rebounds.
Marcos Vazquez added 21 points and 8 assists.
Riley Gossom added 14 points and
Trey Killens added 12 points.
Heidelberg came out of the gate with a fury, leading the first eight minutes into the game. JCU took advantage of HU's turnovers and went on a 14-5 run that lasted 4 minutes with 4 minutes left in the first half. The Blue Streaks led at halftime, 53-38
The Student Princes surged early in the second half, crawling back to within four with 15:36. But just as they did in the first half, the Blue Streaks dialed up the defensive pressure and went on a 9-0 run to rebuild their lead.
From there, the Blue Streaks withstood any hopes of a 'Berg comeback.
Following the event, JCU's Luke Chicone, Kasey Hunt and Heidelberg's
Markell Johnson-Nichols were named to the all-tournament team.
HU is back at home on Wednesday to take on the Bluffton Beavers. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game vs. Wooster.
