HU sweeps CAP in Bexley

BEXLEY, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Volleyball team moved to 2-0 in conference play with a sweep at Capital on Wednesday. After handling the Comets in the first two sets with relative ease, the Student Princes were forced to rally in the third. HU won, 25-16, 25-17, 28-26, and improved to 13-10 overall.

In the opening set, Heidelberg held a 13-9 lead before the hosts closed the gap with a 3-0 run. The Student Princes regained momentum and pushed their advantage back to four in short order. A Capital timeout late in the set did little to slow down HU, which closed on a 6-0 run. Heidelberg attacked at a .370 clip in the set and took advantage of five Comet miscues on serves.

The Berg built their lead early in the second set, racing out to a 10-3 score. Capital closed to within three at one point (18-15), but Heidelberg responded with a 7-2 spurt to win the set. HU was aided by five total blocks in the frame.

Unwilling to go quietly, Capital started the third with a 7-1 outburst.  Later, down 16-10, The Berg forced the Comets into a timeout after three straight points. Cap scored the first point out of the timeout, but HU followed with the six after that, taking a 19-17 lead. Capital roared back and eventually built a 24-23 advantage, but out of a timeout, Sophia Simon extended the match with a kill. In the end, kills from Kaitlyn Uffman and Olivia Miller secured the set and the match for the Tricolor.

Heidelberg hit .223 in the game. Kailee Rank and Simon each had seven kills, while Emma Jones had six with a .462 hitting percentage.

Defensively, Grace Dohanyos had 15 digs and Rank had 10.

The Student Princes have beaten Capital 22 times in a row, dating back to 2007.

Heidelberg returns home to host Marietta on Saturday. First serve inside Seiberling Gymnasium is slated for 1 p.m.
