No. 22 Pioneers escape with win

TIFFIN -- On Community Day, the Heidelberg University Volleyball team pushed No. 22 Marietta College to the brink, but ultimately fell in a fantastic five-set contest in Seiberling Gymnasium. The back-and-forth contest saw HU pick up wins in the first and the third sets, but a lead in the fifth slipped away. Marietta won, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13.

Kaitlyn Uffman led the offense with 16 kills while Sophia Simon had 11 kills and a .455 attack.  Uffman was in on seven blocks.

Grace Dohanyos had a team-high 28 digs, one of four in double figures for HU. Reagan Davis had 10 and was 25-for-25 on serve receptions.

In the decisive fifth set, Heidelberg jumped out to a 8-5 lead at the switch. The Pioneers, coming off a key OAC win at Otterbein on Wednesday, battled back with an 8-2 run. Down 13-10, the Student Princes responded well out of a time out, using kills from Uffman and Rylee Ritzhaupt to help tie the match at 13. Marietta took a time out to regroup, then came out and took the final two points.

Olivia Miller had 20 assists and Maddie Reed had 18.

Prior to the match, Tiffin Mayor Lee Wilkinson tallied an ace with the ceremonial first serve.

Heidelberg is back in action on Wednesday against Ohio Northern. First serve inside Seiberling Gymnasium is slated for 7 p.m.
