TIFFIN --
Brianna Braatz scored both goals for the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer in another shutout victory, as the Student Princes upending visiting Bethany College, 2-0. The shutout was Heidelberg's third in a row to start the season -- extending their program record to begin a campaign.
Heidelberg had the better opportunities in the first 25 minutes of the game, including a free kick off the crossbar from 30 yards out by
Syd Hewer. Prior to that,
Brianna Braatz had the ball taken off her foot by the goalkeeper, thwarting a great opportunity.
Braatz broke down the right side in the 27th minute and got into the penalty area alone. With time, she slipped the ball to the left of the goalkeeper for her second goal in as many games. Just over three minutes later, Braatz narrowly missed another goal, banging a shot off the crossbar.
Braatz found the brace in the 39th minute, running onto a well-struck entry ball from
Alex Henning and one-timing it into the net. The picturesque tally put The Berg up 2-0.
Though they had a few great chances, the Student Princes were content on defending their two goal advantage in the second half. Bethany's best chances came from Jada Benjamin. In the 52nd minute, she forced 'Berg goalkeeper
Brigid Enright to come off her line and dive for the ball. In the 84th minute, Benjamin headed a ball past a diving Enright, but it trickled past the post and out for a goal kick.
Enright only needed to make one save on five Bison shots, picking up another clean sheet. The defense in front of her -- led by
Olivia Perry,
Camdyn Paul, and
Olivia Dulay -- controlled traffic throughout the contest.
The last time HU had three consecutive shutouts came as part of a four-game shutout streak from Sept. 20-30, 2017.
Braatz finished the week with three goals and two assists.
Heidelberg travels to Adrian College on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
