WILMINGTON -- The Heidelberg University Softball team salvaged a doubleheader split at Wilmington on Saturday, picking up a sorely-needed victory in the nightcap after being run-ruled in the opener.
Jade Torres was a torrid 5-for-7 with four singles and a double on the afternoon.
Ellie Tressler had three hits while
Aubrey Conklin and
Gabbie Stallbaum each had two.
GAME ONE: WILM 10-8-0 HEID 2-5-2
The Quakers raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first and doubled their lead by the end of the third.
Heidelberg found some energy in the fourth.
Aubrey Conklin led off with a walk, then stole second. After
Morgan Woycitzky reached,
Jessica Voitko loaded the bases with a single to left.
Jade Torres tallied her third hit of the game, smacking a two-run single up the middle.
Wilmington would seal the run-rule victory in the fifth.
GAME TWO: BERG 8-10-5 WILM 6-12-2
Heidelberg found a better result in game two, opting to score multiple runs in the first instead of giving up multiple runs. Torres started with a single up the middle, then moved to second on a base hit by Tressler. Stallbaum delivered an RBI single up the middle and Heidelberg was in business.
Murissa Drown followed with a single through the left side that drove in Tressler.
Caitlynn Newlen plated Stallbaum with a ground out before Conklin doubled in Drown. In all, it was a four-run first for Heidelberg.
Up 4-2 in the third, The Berg added a run. Conklin had a two-out RBI single, scoring Newlen. The Quakers answered with two in the bottom of the third, then tied the game with a run in the fourth.
Wilmington grabbed their first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
In perhaps their most important inning of the season, Heidelberg answered with three runs.
Carmen Moore singled and moved to second on a walk drawn by Woycitzky. Pinch hitter
Lillie Robeson reached on an error to load the bases. Torres sent a ball to second that was misplayed, allowing two runs to cross the plate. Torres swiped second and scored an insurance run on a single to left by Tressler.
Up 8-6, reliever
Kailyn Kroll (W, 4-1) was able to keep the Quakers scoreless for the final two innings.
