TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Softball team emerged victorious in a Dems Day doubleheader at Frann's Field, taking two from John Carroll University.
Gabbie Stallbaum hit a walk-off single to win the opener, 3-2, then HU's
Caitlin Dems outdueled her little sister, JCU's Kristin Dems, in the nightcap, 5-1.
Heidelberg improved to 12-24 overall and 5-9 in the OAC.
GAME ONE: BERG 3-5-1 JCU 2-7-2
The Blue Streaks scored one in the top of the first, but 'Berg starter
Jessica Voitko did a good job to mitigate the damage. HU answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.
Murissa Drown led off the fourth with a double to the gap in right center and scored the go-ahead run on a single by
Jade Torres. John Carroll tied the game in the fifth, narrowly executing a double steal.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the bases empty,
Aubrey Conklin took a fastball to the leg and
Ellie Tressler worked a walk. After moving up on a wild pitch, Conklin scored easily when Stallbaum sent a blistering single to center.
Voitko earned the win, throwing the complete game. She allowed seven hits and struck out five.
GAME TWO: BERG 5-10-1 JCU 1-6-1
The highly-anticipated Dems vs. Dems showdown took place in the nightcap, and Heidelberg opened up the scoring early. Conklin led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Morgan Woycitzky. Stallbaum stayed hot, ripping an RBI single to right.
HU tacked on two more in the second.
Caitlynn Newlen stroked a single through the left side before Torres and
Lillie Robeson reached on infield hits. Conklin sent a pop up to shallow right center that blew over enough to fall between the fielders. Though JCU forced Robeson out at second, Newlen scored. Woycitzky followed with another infield single that plated Torres.
Down 3-0 in the third, JCU plated their only run of the game off Dems.
In the bottom of the fourth, Robeson scored from first on a double by Conklin. Later, pinch runner
Shannon Wyatt scored on yet another Stallbaum RBI single.
JCU had a leadoff triple in the fifth, but failed to score. Dems retired the final nine batters she faced en route to the victory. She threw a full seven innings, striking out four.
