WBB tripped up in season finale

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Women's basketball team fell to Wilmington College in their final game of the 2023-24 season, 78-67. The women closed out the season with a final record of 4-21, 1-17 OAC. 

Morgan Altenburger tallied a team-high 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Chloe Gilbert added 16 in the loss. 

Wilmington got out to an early 8-0 lead forcing a quick Heidelberg timeout. HU stopped the bleeding and cut their deficit to two following an Amari Slaughter shot from distance. The visitors closed the first quarter on an 8-2 run making it 25-20.

Neither team could find the bucket to begin the second quarter, but the Quakers struck first at the seven minute mark with a layup in the paint stretching their lead to 27-20. The Student Princes cut the deficit to six, but Wilmington split a pair of free throws at the end of the half to take the 40-33 lead into the break.

Ashley Ballard scored seven of her nine points in the third quarter with three coming at the charity stripe. The visitors kept their foot on the gas and took a ten point advantage into the final quarter. 

Heidelberg started the final quarter on a 4-0 run to cut their deficit to six following two from the line by Gilbert. Wilmington stretched their lead back to double-digits after a Keetyn Hupp shot from behind the arc. HU was not able to get back into the game, resulting in the 78-67 loss. 

Altenburger led the team in points this season with 266 and also pulled down a team-high 195 rebounds. Gilbert dished out 54 assists with Emma Keto adding 51 of her own.
