TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team hadn't faced cross-state foe Kenyon College since the 1983-84 season. The last season the teams met was the 1983-84 campaign -- the same season Kenyon left the Ohio Athletic Conference. During one of those games, Leapin' Lee Harris set a Heidelberg record with five dunks.
Fast forward 41 seasons. Heidelberg and Kenyon -- now known as the Owls -- tipped off once again. This time?
Eric Panning poured in 33 points and bested Harris with six dunks of his own -- including two alley-oops.
The Student Princes pulled away late, closing on a 28-10 run in an 80-59 victory over Kenyon.
Panning's 33-point outburst came on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line. He added eight boards and two blocks.
Markell Johnson-Nichols had 13 points and eight assists while
Zane Leitwein added 11 points.
Despite leading by just four points at halftime, Heidelberg never trailed in the first period.
The hosts tried to pull away early in the second half but the Owls fought their way back into the contest. A three-point play by Gefen Bar-Cohen brought Kenyon to within one at 48-47 with 8:25 left.
On the ensuing possession, Leitwein calmly drained a 3-pointer right in front of the 'Berg bench. Seconds later, Panning kept the crowd energized with an emphatic blocked shot.
Up 52-49 with 6:45 left, Heidelberg methodically pulled away with Panning scoring 14 of HU's final 28 points.
Heidelberg improved to 3-2 overall and Kenyon dropped to 0-4.
The Student Princes have a 10-day hiatus over Thanksgiving break and return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Wisconsin-Platteville.
