Hewer lifts Berg past Purple Raiders

TIFFIN -- After conceding an early goal, the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team said, "That's not how today is gonna go." The Student Princes answered quickly and pulled away late in a 5-2 drubbing of Mount Union at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex on Saturday.

Syd Hewer had two goals and an assist in the victory, helping push The Berg to 9-2-3 overall, 2-1-2 in the OAC.

The Purple Raiders took the lead in the third minute on a goal by Rylee Hutton.

In the seventh, HU responded with Hewer's first of the day. Dribbling the ball across midfield, Hewer played the ball into space down the left wing for Brianna Braatz. Playing the ball back across the field with her left foot, Braatz found Hewer cutting in front of a defender. With one flick of her foot, Hewer beat the goalkeeper.

On a corner kick in the 24th minute, the Mount Union goalkeeper made a diving save to her right. Ella Marshall pounced on the loose ball and hammered it home -- triumphantly raising her fists just after the ball tickled the top netting. Heidelberg took the 2-1 lead into halftime.

Mount Union tied the game in the 76th minute, touching off a frenzied final 14 minutes.

Heidelberg dialed up the intensity, immediately drawing a foul just outside the penalty area. Hewer blistered the restart past the wall and the goalkeeper -- scoring her sixth of the season, and giving HU the lead once more.

Though the Purple Raiders were desperate to find an equalizer, Mallory Zavatchen provided an insurance goal. She knocked in a loose ball off a corner kick from Hewer in the 83rd minute.

Braatz added her eighth of the season in the 84th minute, scoring on a breakaway.

'Berg goalkeeper Brigid Enright made six stops in the win.

Heidelberg returns to action against John Carroll on Wednesday. HU hosts the Blue Streaks at 4 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
