MARIETTA -- The shutout string is over, both offensively and defensively, for the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team, after a 2-1 victory at Marietta College on Saturday.
Syd Hewer opened up the scoring early in the first half.
Mallory Zavatchen was tripped near the sideline, drawing a whistle. On the restart,
Ella Jacobs lofted a ball in toward the back post. Hewer ran on and headed it into the net, picking up her fourth goal of the campaign.
Down 1-0 at the half, Marietta tied the game in the 55th minute. A well-designed play on a corner kick allowed the Pioneers to head a loose ball past
Brigid Enright, tying the game at one.
Undeterred, the Student Princes answered quickly.
Brianna Braatz and
Viviana Palmer applied pressure on the backline of Marietta while the hosts tried to pass the ball out of their defensive third. A quick challenge by Braatz forced a turnover, and Palmer played the loose ball ahead for a sprinting Braatz. One skillful cutback and Braatz had an open look at the net -- burying her seventh goal of the season.
Enright and the defense made the one-goal lead stand up, moving the Student Princes to 1-0-2 in OAC action and 8-1-3 overall.
The Marietta goal snapped Enright's personal shutout streak at 628 minutes.
The Student Princes travel to Ada on Wednesday to battle Ohio Northern. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
