TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team was back at home to open the new year, hosting John Carroll. Despite a double-double from
Morgan Altenburger, the Student Princes fell, 87-50.
Heidelberg dropped to 3-9, 0-5 OAC, while John Carroll improved to 8-4, 3-2 OAC.
Going into the fourth with five points and nine rebounds, Altenburger tallied her third season and career double-double mark with a ten-point surge in the final seven minutes.
After the Blue Streaks started with a hot 9-0 run, Heidelberg stepped things up with an 11-6 run of their own.
Chloe Gilbert and
Jewel Persinger each picked up a 3-pointer to help cut the HU deficit to eight by the end of the first, 20-12.
In the second, six critical Heidelberg turnovers led to John Carroll points, making it difficult to ease the visitors' momentum. The Berg matched each score up until the last five minutes of the quarter when the guests got hot from three, making one before the final buzzer to enter halftime, 42-19.
Out of the half, the Student Princes held the Blue Streaks to their fewest points and smallest margin, scoring 16 to their 19. Shooting 7-18 (38.9%) from three in total, Heidelberg iced John Carroll from deep as they went 0-3. In the final seconds,
Mya Jones grabbed an offensive rebound and bucket for a 61-35 score.
Altenburger got hot in the fourth as she picked up ten of her 15 points. Her run consisted of two 3-pointers, a layup and a jumper.
Ashley Ballard had two of the assists, while Jones and Gilbert set up the other two. An aggressive John Carroll team closed out the game 87-50.
Jones added eight points and Ballard tallied seven rebounds.
The women's team takes a road trip down to Wilmington (2-9, 0-5 OAC) for a rare 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon tipoff.
