WBB struck down by JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - The Heidelberg University Women's basketball team fell to John Carroll on Wednesday evening, 72-51. Morgan Altenburger led all HU scorers with her fifth season double-double consisting of 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Ashley Ballard, Chloe Gilbert, and Cheyanne Bean all tallied seven in the loss.

Heidelberg (3-15, 0-11 OAC) got on the board first as Altenburger laid one in for two following a nice pass from Gilbert. Both teams would trade leads early, but HU would take the largest lead of the quarter, 14-10 following a Ballard shot from distance. John Carroll (10-8, 5-6 OAC)  closed the first quarter on a 4-0 run making it 14-14 after one.

The beginning of the second quarter saw the Student Princes take the 19-17 lead after sharpshooting Amari Slaughter nailed a triple early in the second quarter. The home team would go on an 8-0 to force a Heidelberg timeout with the score, 25-19.

Heidelberg was only able to muster two more points in the quarter leading to the home team taking the 36-21 lead into halftime.

After only scoring seven points in the second quarter, HU was able to net 16 in the third with Lillian White and Mya Jones getting in the scoring column during the action. John Carroll's 19 points helped the hosts take the 55-37 lead into the final quarter of play.

Altenburger notched six of her 14 points in the fourth quarter while Emma Keto scored all four of her points in the final quarter. John Carroll outscored Heidelberg 17-14 in the final quarter resulting in the 72-51 defeat.

The women's team will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Westerville to take on Otterbein University (6-12, 4-7 OAC), looking to avenge an eight-point loss in December. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
