TIFFIN -- The surging Heidelberg University Volleyball team made quick work of visiting Hiram College, sweeping the Terriers. The victory -- 25-12, 25-15, 25-21 -- extended Heidelberg's winning streak to 10.
Despite the quick match, which took a brisk 70 minutes, several Student Princes put up big numbers.
Riley Tople led with 10 kills and
Grace Porter added eight. Porter,
Lexi Evak and
Kaitlyn Uffman all hit better than .500.
Maddie Reed and
Gabby Cumbo took the lion's share of the sets, picking up 18 and 12 assists, respectively.
Libero
Nicole Thomas was busy, tallying 21 digs.
Heidelberg (10-1) took control of the first set with a 12-0 run and led 17-6. The run featured four kills from Tople and three from Evak.
Instead of one big scoring outburst, HU used two smaller spurts to gain control of the second set. A 5-0 run early gave Heidelberg a 9-3 advantage. Later, an 8-2 spell -- powered by three Uffman finishes -- put the Tricolor in front, 19-10.
The final set was the closest, as neither team was able to find much separation. Hiram (2-7) effectively used their two timeouts to thwart mini-rallies for Heidelberg. With the set tied at 21, however, the hosts closed on a 4-0 run -- capped by an ace from Cumbo.
Heidelberg's last 10-match winning streak came late in the 2016 season.
The Student Princes face four formidable opponents at the upcoming Bishop Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan. Heidelberg faces the hosts on Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by a matchup with Franklin. Saturday, HU will battle with Spalding and Bethany.
