DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team's 10 game winning streak was snapped on Friday night as they fell 3-1 to the Battling Bishops in their opening match. The Tricolor bounced back with a 3-1 win over Franklin College, their second match of the Bishop Invitational.
Kaitlyn Uffman and
Riley Tople finished the day with 15 kills each.
Anamya Truex marked 14, followed by
Grace Porter at 12.
Lexi Evak rounded out the crew in double digits, tallying 11 of her own.
The Heidelberg offense was fueled by setter
Bridgette Burrus who tallied 35 assists – with 22 in the Ohio Wesleyan game, her second most of the season.
Maddie Reed added in 15 of her own, accompanied by Gabbie Cumbo who had a dozen in the Franklin match.
Nicole Thomas managed to pick up 49 digs between the two matches, partnered with
Grace Dohanyos who tallied 23. Sophomore
Natalie Chiles also contributed 11 digs in the nightcap.
Evak led the way in blocks, turning away six. Partner in crime Truex marked five, followed by Tople and Uffman at four a piece.
HEIDELBERG 1 OHIO WESLEYAN 3 (25-21, 20-25, 16-25, 25-18)
Although falling to the Battling Bishops 3-1, the Student Princes put up a just fight. After the 15th point of the first set, Heidelberg outscored their opponents 6-1, spearheaded by kills from Truex and Porter. Three more errors from the hosts gave way to the 25-21 victory.
A rattled Ohio Wesleyan team found themselves down 10-3 to start the second set – giving Heidelberg four points just from errors. They would then rally to find six straight of their own. The Battling Bishops regained the lead at 16-15, which Heidelberg never got back.
The hosts continued into the third and fourth sets with the same dominant energy, for the eventual match win.
HEIDELBERG 3 FRANKLIN 1 (25-18, 27-25, 25-19, 25-20)
HU kept the first set pretty even until the back half, breaking for their largest lead at 15-10, before the ending 26-18 triumph. A total of 13 errors by the Grizzlies made it easy on the Heidelberg defense.
Franklin took an edge over The Berg in the second set where they capped the topsy-turvy series with an ace. At the beginning, Heidelberg ignited for seven straight points consisting of two consecutive kills from Tople.
A more evenly matched third set featured three kills from Katilyn Uffman.
The fourth started a bit concerning for 'Berg fans, as Franklin picked up eight straight before Head Coach
Jason Miller called a time out to collect themselves. After the break, Heidelberg outscored their opponents 7-2. Franklin stayed relentless, maintaining a 17-14 lead before forcing yet another HU timeout. From there, the game was knotted at 18 before
Lexi Wachtman would tally two kills in the finale.
On Saturday, the Heidelberg volleyball team will return to Delaware for day two of the Bishop Invitational where they will face two more opponents. At 10:30 a.m. they will face Spalding (2-4) and Bethany (6-3) at 1 p.m.
