TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team was held scoreless for 18 consecutive innings on Saturday -- but still managed to cap the season with a sweep of visiting Ohio Northern. A first-inning grand slam by
Cort Kramer was enough to propel HU to a 6-3 win in the opener, and
Camden Farley hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning of a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.
Heidelberg's season concludes with a 19-21 record overall, 7-11 in the OAC.
The walk-off was Heidelberg's second game-ending homer of the season, joining
Andrew Cook's three-run blast against Anderson on April 26.
GAME ONE: BERG 6-5-1 ONU 3-7-0
Heidelberg did all of its damage in the first two innings. In the first,
Braedy Limke singled and stole second. A walk to
Aidan Corrigan and a hit by pitch to
Camden Farley loaded the bases with no outs.
Adam McVicker pushed a run across with a fielder's choice, beating out a potential double play. With the bases full once again,
Cort Kramer went opposite field for a fence-scraping grand slam -- his second homer of the season.
Ahead 5-1 in the bottom of the second,
Orion Kroah turned on a pitch and launched his first collegiate home run to right. The longball gave Heidelberg a 6-1 lead.
Neither team scored until the Polar Bears plated a pair in the ninth.
Heidelberg starter
Jackson Powers (6-4) was dominant. The sophomore threw eight full innings, scattering four hits and fanning three.
GAME TWO: BERG 1-6-0 ONU 0-5-1 (13 inn.)
Heidelberg pitchers Corbin Kaplan,
Zane Mirgon, and
Corey Brafford absolutely shoved. Kaplan went nine shutout innings and Mirgon worked the 10th and 11th. Brafford (1-3) held the Polar Bears at bay in the 12th and 13th. Unfortunately, ONU's Jack Hutchins and Blake Peterson matched Kapaln, Mirgon, and Brafford -- pitch for pitch.
The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the 13th. Farley, leading off, ripped the fourth pitch of the inning and mashed it to the banks of Rock Creek. The majestic blast, Farley's fourth of the season, touched off a frenzy at home plate and capped the season with a monumental exclamation mark.
Kaplan scattered four hits in nine innings -- the longest outing of his career -- and struck out four. Mirgon walked two and hit a batter, but did not allow a hit. Brafford only allowed one hit, picking up his first career win.
SENIOR DAY:
Once the dust (and turf pellets) settled after game two, Heidelberg honored five seniors --
Thomas Sauer,
Adam McVicker,
Zane Mirgon,
Aidan Corrigan and
Jackson Armbrecht.
