Yellow Jackets prevail at Frann's Field

TIFFIN -- Limited to a total of nine hits on the day, the Heidelberg University softball fell twice to the visiting Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, 3-2 and 3-1.  For the Student Princes, a late lead slipped away in the opener and an early hole was too big to climb out of in the nightcap.

Heidelberg slid to 15-18 overall, 5-7 in the conference.

Scoreless in the fourth, Halie Monhollen tripled to deep right field, scoring Morgan Woycitzky and Ellie Tressler.

Still up by two in the top of the seventh, a leadoff walk and an error doomed HU as they tried to close out the Yellow Jackets. Down 2-1, BW used a two-out, two-run triple to take the lead.  Monhollen, who had already made a phenomenal diving catch in a ball in shallow center, narrowly missed making a game-saving catch with an all-out dive.

BW closed out Heidelberg in the bottom of the seventh.

Jessica Voitko (8-9) threw 6.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits.  She walked one and fanned three.

The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the second inning of the nightcap and carried the lead into the fifth.

Tressler doubled in the fifth, sending Murissa Drown to third.  Voitko grounded out to first, but Tressler crossed the plate on the play.  BW escaped the jam, then retired Heidelberg in order in the sixth and the seventh.

Caitlin Dems (5-2) worked 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits. Defensively, she was a perfect two-for-two on throws to first base.

Payton Scheid worked the final 0.1 innings in both halves of the doubleheader.

Monhollen collected three hits on the day.

Heidelberg travels to Muskingum on Saturday for a 1 p.m. twinbill with the Muskies.
