PUNTA GORDA, Florida – Following a day of rest, the Heidelberg University baseball team was back in action on Wednesday as they took on Misericordia University. The 'Berg bats came alive, tallying eight hits, but was not enough in a 14-6 loss.
Ty Kirk got the start for the Student Princes going two innings, giving up three runs on two hits and striking out one.
Misericordia struck first in the second inning when Nick Giordino hit a double down the left field line, clearing the bases for the Cougars. Heidelberg was able to stop the momentum as
Andrew Pokley threw a runner out at home.
Misericordia was able to tack on two more in the home half of the third making it 5-0.
HU got things going in the fourth. Pokley led off with a walk before junior
Andrew Cook singled to left field. With no outs in the inning,
Adam McVicker hit a bases-clearing triple to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The hot streak continued as
Zane Mirgon singled to shortstop allowing McVicker to come across home plate. Two sacrifice flies from The Berg allowed two more runs to score to help secure a six-run inning and a 6-5 lead.
The Cougars responded the following inning by getting two runs back, with one coming on a suicide squeeze, to put them back up 7-6 after four innings of play.
Following two scoreless innings, Misericordia stretched their lead to 9-6 in the seventh after Derek Vosburg hit a double, scoring two runs. The Cougars were able to add on five more runs in the inning that ended up being the back breaker for Heidelberg.
Camden Farley had two hits on the day. McVicker knocked in two RBI in the loss.
Heidelberg will be back in action tomorrow against Dean College. Start time is set for 10:30 a.m.
