Berg settles for split with Adrian

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University softball team picked up a non-conference split with Adrian College on Tuesday. The Student Princes took the opener, 5-4, but were stymied in the nightcap, 5-0.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Heidelberg, which returns to action on Thursday at Oberlin.

GAME ONE:  BERG 5-7-2   ADRIAN 4-5-2

Scoreless in the third, Heidelberg struck first.  Halie Monhollen led off with a double and scored when Gabbie Stallbaum reached on a throwing error.

The Bulldogs took the lead with three unearned runs in the fourth.

Emma Dean got things rolling in the home half of the fourth as she smashed a double to left center.  Pinch runner Morgan Woycitzky scored on a two-out single by Monhollen.  Stallbaum followed with a two-run double that gave HU a 4-3 advantage.

The Bulldogs quickly knotted the game at four in the fifth..

After wasting another double by Dean in the fifth, Heidelberg took the lead in the sixth.  Ellie Tressler ripped a one-out double to center, then scored on a throwing error as Monhollen laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Starter Jessica Voitko (5-5), who scattered four hits in the complete game, worked around a one-out walk in the seventh to seal the victory.  She struck out two.

GAME TWO:  ADRIAN 4-6-0   BERG 0-4-1

Heidelberg's Hailey Schink and Adrian's Abbi Patton went toe-to-toe in the circle, keeping both teams off the scoreboard through five innings.  The Bulldogs broke through with three runs in the sixth and added an unearned run in the seventh.

Schink limited Adrian to five hits in six full innings of work.  Kailyn Kroll worked the seventh.

Patton held HU to four hits, keeping HU off balance with a great mix of pitches and speeds.  Of her 21 outs recorded, 18 were on the ground and three were in the air.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

Stallbaum extended her hitting streak to six, and has reached base in each of her last 12 games … Dean ran her career doubles total to 31 and into a tie for seventh in the Heidelberg record book, equalling Jadie Wheeler (1996-99).  She has 87 career RBIs, also good for seventh.
