Box Score 2 ALMA, Mich. -- Behind a monster day from
Jade Torres, the Heidelberg University softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep at Alma College. The Student Princes held on for an 8-6 win in the opener, then took the nightcap, 5-1.
Playing a day early because of the weather forecast, Heidelberg improved to 8-9 overall. The Berg extended its win streak to three, matching a season best.
Torres had five hits to go along with five two-out RBIs.
Gabbie Stallbaum had four hits, including three doubles.
GAME ONE: Berg 8-14-2 Alma 6-9-1
After taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI ground out by
Halie Monhollen, Heidelberg put up a three-spot in the third.
Jade Torres and
Meghan Bame both singled, then scored on a double by
Emma Dean. Dean moved to third on a hit by
Jessica Voitko, then scored with a head-first slide on a bouncer to short by
Murissa Drown.
Down 4-0, Alma -- playing its home opener -- tied the game in the bottom of the third.
The game remained knotted at 4 until Heidelberg scored four in the fifth. Dean doubled and scored on a single by Drown. Drown sprinted around the bases and scored on a double by
Ellie Tressler. With two down and the bases full, Torres slashed a single to right center that plated a pair.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Scots scored twice and brought the tying run to the plate. With two down,
Hanna Blasinsky tracked down a hard-hit ball to the gap in left center to seal the victory.
Starter
Payton Scheid (2-0) got the win, throwing 6.2 innings and allowing five earned runs. She fanned two and walked none. Voitko picked up her first save of the season, getting the final out.
GAME TWO: Berg 5-10-0 Alma 1-3-2
Alma took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but HU responded quickly. After the first two hitters were retired, Monhollen reached on a dropped fly ball in left.
Gabbie Stallbaum followed with a line drive double to the gap in left center that tied the game. Blasinsky reached with basehit to left. With two down, Torres once again delivered a clutch hit -- driving in two with a double to the wall in center.
Heidelberg added one in the top of the fourth, with Stallbaum singling in Monhollen.
Ahead 4-1, the Student Princes pushed across another insurance run. Blasinsky pulled a two-out double past the right fielder then scored on an inside-out single by Torres.
After earning the save in the opener, Voitko (4-5) went the distance in the nightcap. She scattered three hits over seven innings, allowing one run. She fanned seven.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Prior to Friday, Heidelberg was 0-10 all-time against Alma -- the most losses without a win against any team in program history … Heidelberg also snapped a winless streak against Albion on Wednesday. HU had been 0-5 all-time against the Britons.
UP NEXT:
The Berg is scheduled to return to action on Monday with a home doubleheader against Adrian -- HU's third-straight A-initialed opponent from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Monday's forecast, however, does not look favorable. Any changes to the doubleheader with the Bulldogs, slated for a 3:30 p.m. start, will be announced on BergAthletics.com when available.
