PUNTA GORDA, Florida – Following a big win yesterday, the Heidelberg University baseball team was back in action taking on Mitchell College. Down eight runs going into the ninth, HU was able to get back four, but was not enough to secure a victory, falling 10-6.
On the mound for the Student Princes was
Jackson Powers (1-1). He went 4.2 innings giving up seven hits and five runs, while striking out three.
With runners in scoring position early for Heidelberg,
Reece McNeely hit a SAC fly to deep left field allowing
Thomas Sauer to score. HU led 1-0 after two innings of play.
The Mariners responded the next inning getting a run back following a single to right field from Bo Yaworski.
Jackson Powers was able to get out of a bases loaded jam by forcing a double-play to end the inning.
Mitchell put two more runs across following doubles from Lelo Martinez and Owen Robbins. The Mariners took the 3-1 lead after four.
HU saw its deficit grow in the top of the fifth when Mitchell tacked on two more runs making it 5-1.
The Student Princes were able to get a run back on an
Andrew Pokley SAC fly pushing McVicker across the dish.
The seventh and ninth innings saw the Mariners add four insurance runs to bring the score to 10-2.
Heidelberg found some momentum in the final inning of play.
Camden Farley and Pokley led the inning off drawing consecutive walks.
Kyle Krummen tallied a single that allowed Farley and Pokley to score.
With two guys on,
Aidan Corrigan hit a double to right field, clearing the bases for HU. Heidelberg was able to get four runs back in the inning but was not enough in the end resulting in a 10-6 loss.
Andrew Cook and
Kyle Krummen tallied two hits on the day. Corrigan drove in two RBI for The Berg.
The team will be back in action tomorrow for their final game in the Sunshine State. They will take on the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m.
