BEXLEY – The Heidelberg University women's basketball team was back in action on Wednesday as they traveled to Capital University to take on the Comets. The Berg showed great fight in the first half, only trailing by three at the break, but were unable to keep pace in the second half, falling 53-39.
After getting in a quick 6-2 deficit, Heidelberg closed the first quarter on an 8-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer from the corner by
Elisha Carter.
In the second, Heidelberg led by as many as six.
Hallie Rogers was 4-4 from the line and scored nine points in the period. The lead toggled back and forth between the teams, but the Comets emerged with a 25-22 advantage at halftime.
The Comets outscored Heidelberg in the third, 16-7, to gain control of the game. Capital forced Heidelberg into 13 turnovers in the period, and led 41-29 after three quarters of action.
In the fourth, Capital pushed their lead to 20 with 5:12 to play. They led 53-33, but would be held scoreless the rest of the way.
Brigid Enright scored on back-to-back possessions, cutting into the Comet lead.
Alyssa Martin capped off the day with a floater to wrap things up at 53-39.
Rogers finished with nine points to lead Heidelberg, which had 10 scorers on the evening.
Ashley Ballard collected a team-high nine rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
The Heidelberg bench outpaced the Comet reserves, 21-6.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday when they host Otterbein on Senior Day. The women's game is slated to start after the conclusion of the 2 p.m. men's game.
