SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- For the first time under the direction of Head Coach
Bill Cooper, the Heidelberg University Indoor Track & Field teams were in action on Saturday. Their competition in the Wittenberg Tiger Collegiate Opener was headlined by
Jake McEntyre's record-breaking 60M yard dash.
In his 18th career attempt at the 60M yard dash, sophomore
Jake McEntyre broke the Heidelberg University record which was a time of 6.94 set by Julius Higginbotham in 2008. During prelims, McEntyre clocked 7.00, good for sixth. Then, in finals, he shot out for his fastest at 6.91.
The sprint was good for third place overall. During his freshman season, he fell below the seven-second mark five times and even came within one millisecond from tying the mark. McEntyre also holds the record in the 100M dash, which he set in March.
Another stellar performance was from
Connor Ladd, who picked up second place and a big personal record in the 5000M. With a time of 15:32.84, he tallied a career-best by 34 seconds. Ironically, his prior best was also set at Wittenberg, in February of 2022.
HU had a strong showing in the event, as not far behind Ladd was
Rick Cimino with a time of 15:47.82 for third place and
Josh Fiorentino at 16:46.72.
All-OAC
Liv Bean was back in action, marking a 5th-place finish in the 60M hurdles for a time of 9.64. She also competed in the Long Jump, marking a distance of 4.99M
In the women's 800M,
Kenzie Fountain picked up a sixth-place finish, with a time of 2:30.45.
For the field events, freshman
Amelia Lewin boasted a fourth-place finish for her first career performance. The 11.69M shot put throw was the top Heidelberg performance. Very close by was
Morgan Sweat, heaving 11.52M for fifth.
The 2023 OAC Javelin champion,
Reese Recker, also competed in the shot put. Picking up a distance of 10.98M, she was just 0.01 from tying her career best.
Another notable performance was from freshman Korbyn Haley (who recently tied the NCAA record for touchbacks in football) for the Men's Long Jump. Marking a distance of 6.31M in his first showing, he picked up ninth.
On the men's shot put side, freshman
