TIFFIN -- An early surge of energy bolstered the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mount Union on Saturday.
Madi Lause netted both goals in the win, marking her sixth of the season.
The Student Princes advanced to 4-4-2 (2-1 OAC), while the Purple Raiders fell to 6-6-1 (1-2 OAC).
Heidelberg entered the contest with lots of noise and aggression, which shined through in the 10th minute. HU steamrolled their way down the field, finding a cross from the deep corner that looked like what would be a
Caitlyn Cross goal. An unlucky shot to the crossbar bounced back where Lause cleaned up the carom as the team burst into celebration.
Just seven minutes later, a corner kick gave Cross the initial blocked attempt. Fortunately, Lause was again in perfect position to get the rebound and shot it straight over the head of the goalie for a 2-0 lead.
An unrelenting team of Raiders battled in the second, as they managed a goal four minutes out of the half. A pass through the middle of the box found the chest of Madelin Boulos, who pumped it in for the final goal of the day.
Lause's two goals marked the second game this season where she put up a brace in a game (vs Thiel 9/20). On the season, Heidelberg has scored 14 goals, six of which are kudos to Lause's efforts.
Heidelberg had eight shots in the first half, where they were held to three in the second. In total, the Tricolor outshot Mount Union 11-7, with both teams notching five on goal.
Back in goal,
Brigid Enright played the full 90 minutes. She grabbed four saves on the day, which moves her into the fourth most in the OAC, with 41.
Lause now has 21 career goals, which places her as the 14th most in the 'Berg record book. Ahead of Lause is Lynne Kraemer (1989-1991) with 22 goals and Gwen Miller (1993-1996) at 28. Fellow teammate turned alumni,
Audrey Kaufman (2019-2022) is the most recent addition to the list, with a total of 29 goals upon the conclusion of her career.
Heidelberg continues their Ohio Athletic Conference drive on Wednesday as they head to Ada, Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears (3-7-1, 2-1 OAC). They will return to Hidden Valley on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Homecoming kickoff with Otterbein.
