WESTERVILLE, Ohio --
Alyssa Martin led the Heidelberg University women's basketball team with a career-high 14 points on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Student Princes fell on the road to Otterbein, 57-45.
The Student Princes hung close with the hosts in the first quarter, down 17-10. Four of those points came from the line, which included a successful and-one play from
Taylor Ratliff with one minute remaining.
A Heidelberg scoring drought in the second helped the Cardinals extend their lead. Martin started it off by sinking her third and fourth free throws of the game. Two minutes later, she added a layup off of a pass from
Morgan Altenburger. Despite their offensive woes, HU managed to hold Otterbein to 13 and entered the half down 30-17.
Martin came out of the locker room red hot, as she scored eight points in four minutes. Buckling down on defense, HU only allowed Jenna Hoschouer to two points, who had 18 in just the first half. Otterbein used five steals to finish the quarter with an 8-0 run, The Berg trailing 43-25.
Outscoring the Cardinals 20-14 in the fourth, it wasn't enough to overcome the 18-point deficit.
Hallie Rogers and
Elisha Carter each put up seven points. Martin pulled down seven rebounds and found two blocks.
Seeing big minutes for the first time in her career, freshman
Brigid Enright picked up four rebounds – matching teammates
Ashley Ballard and
Sequoia Bradley.
Triples were hard to come by for the night as both teams shot 2-14 from deep. A close night on the boards, Otterbein only managed three more than The Berg.
Heidelberg returns to Seiberling Gymnasium on Wednesday as they take on Capital University (9-4, 3-3 OAC) for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
