TIFFIN, Ohio – Despite a valiant effort, the Heidelberg University women's basketball fell to No. 10 Baldwin Wallace, 47-37, on Wednesday evening.
Hallie Rogers had nine points and eight steals in the loss.
Cheyanne Bean added eight points in the paint.
A spirited effort in the first quarter resulted in a two-point lead for Heidelberg after 10 minutes of action. Down 6-3, the Student Princes went on a 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by
Sequoia Bradley.
In the second quarter, Heidelberg continued to capitalize on BW misses and miscues. HU outscored BW, 11-4, in points from turnovers in the first half. The frame included a nifty over-the-head layup by
Morgan Altenburger after
Cheyanne Bean gathered an offensive rebound. HU led 20-19 at intermission.
Rogers opened up the second half with a 3-pointer off of an offensive rebound and assist from Bradley, giving HU a four-point lead.
The Yellow Jackets, 0-for-8 from beyond the arc in the first half, began to heat up in the third. Hitting shots from the floor and at the line, BW built up a modest six-point lead in the third.
Down 35-31 to start the fourth, Heidelberg remained hot on the heels of the Yellow Jackets, but struggled to score at critical junctures. BW doubled up HU in the fourth, 12-6, and moved on to the win.
Altenburger gathered a game-high eight rebounds as HU edged the visitors on the glass, 34-33.
BW was 13-of-42 (31%) from the floor, but went 18-20 (90%) from the line. Heidelberg only got to the line eight times, making four.
Heidelberg will host Wilmington (10-7, 4-6 OAC) on Saturday for a double header. The women's game is set to start after the men's, which is a 2 p.m. tip-off.
