TIFFIN -- A heavy fourth quarter surge from the Marietta College Pioneers resulted in a 60-39 loss for the Heidelberg University women's basketball team.
Hallie Rogers led the way with 18 points, her eighth time in double digits this season.
The Student Princes held the edge over Marietta for the first six minutes. The initial 'Berg points came from Rogers as she worked her way to two layups. The Pioneers ended the quarter on a 7-0 run, closing it out 11-8.
Midway through the second, Altenburger would pick up a sneaky back door pass from
Ashley Ballard for two, 17-15. Finding the end of the shot clock, Rogers made a turn around heave to bring it within one. Responding well each time, Marietta sank a 3-pointer to keep the advantage 21-17.
With 1:42 remaining,
Sequoia Bradley would use an
Elisha Carter steal for a breakaway layup. Again, Marietta fired back with a 3-pointer. Rogers would cap off the HU score with a 3-pointer at 0:43 and go into the half down 28-22.
Only being outscored by three in the third, Heidelberg hung close in the game. Rogers closed it out by launching a successful 3-pointer from beyond the volleyball line, bringing the score to 40-31.
Finding rhythm and momentum, Marietta outscored Heidelberg 14-1 in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Rogers scored the lone six up to the final minute – two from the line and two from the field.
Marietta would score the final six points to cap off the 21-point victory.
Ballard and
Cheyanne Bean each ended with eight rebounds, followed by Carter with six.
The home team did manage to out rebound the visitors on the defensive end, 31-28.
Marietta improved to 11-4, 6-2 OAC meanwhile the Student Princes fall to 2-13, 0-8 OAC.
Heidelberg will head to Ada on Wednesday to take on #18 Ohio Northern for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
