VB can't crack the Case

CLEVELAND -- Despite having three players with more than 10 kills, the Heidelberg University volleyball team fell in four sets to host Case Western Reserve University, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20.

On the cusp of conference play, Heidelberg slipped to 5-11 overall.  The Spartans improved to 12-3.

Ashley Foster enjoyed one of her finest days at The Berg, amassing 14 kills on 27 swings for a .407 hitting average.  Lexi Wachtman (13 kills, .393) and Grace Porter (10 kills, .333) also added outstanding efforts for the Student Princes.

Kelsey Custenborder dished out 29 assists while Julianna Pena tallied 20.

Defensively, libero Nicole Thomas had a team-high 19 digs and Lexi Evak had three total blocks.

A sluggish start doomed HU in the opening set and CWRU was able to stave off a late rally in the second set.

Trailing 22-21 in the third set, a kill by Porter kicked off a 4-1 run for the Tricolor which extended the match.

In the final set, HU shook off a slow start and tied the set at 11.  Ahead 16-15, CWRU took the next three points and took command of the fourth.

Heidelberg commences OAC action at Muskingum on Saturday.  The match with the Muskies (11-3, 0-1) is scheduled for a 1 p.m.start.
