UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The No. 19 Heidelberg University football team suffered a 24-7 setback at John Carroll University on Saturday. The JCU defense stymied the 'Berg offense, allowing a mere 105 yards of total offense.
Heidelberg dropped to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the OAC. John Carroll improved to 2-1, 2-0.
The Blue Streaks held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Student Princes tied the game early in the second with their best drive of the game.
Drew Sims completed passes to
Glenn Pearson and
Oliver Kelleher as The Berg marched down the field. On 3rd-and-1 from the four,
Montavious Yearby plunged into the end zone.
Branden Steckel's PAT tied the game.
JCU answered on the ensuing drive, going 86 yards on 15 plays. The Blue Streaks converted on five third downs on that drive alone, and went 14-for-20 in the game.
Their success on third downs allowed the hosts to control the clock, winning the time-of-possession battle, 41:01 to 18:59.
John Carroll's offense scored 10 points in the second half.
Sims was limited to 73 yards on 12-of-19 passing and was sacked four times. Yearby had 12 carries for 37 yards.
JCU quarterback Joe Collins threw for 176 yards, 113 of which went to Brennan Fugh. Running back Evan McVay had 91 yards on the ground.
Griffin Pendry had a game-high 10 tackles while
Parker Smith had nine.
Cole Bibart had the lone sack on the day.
The Student Princes will look to regroup next Saturday when they host Muskingum (2-1, 1-1). Kickoff with the Muskies is slated for 1:30 p.m. at Hoernemann Stadium.
