TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team hosted non-conference foe Denison University on Wednesday. HU was unable to capitalize on momentum resulting in a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat.
Heidelberg falls to 5-7 on the season while Denison improves to 5-7.
Set one was dominated by the Big Red, 25-16. Denison held HU to a .212 attack percentage.
In set two, Heidelberg was able to reverse Denison's momentum and fought hard to take it to set three tied at 1-1. A key 7-1 run helped the Student Princes control the set.
The Big Red did not let the loss carryover and they capitalized off some crucial Heidelberg errors in the next two sets to down the Student Princes. Trying to force a fifth set, the hosts led , 19-14 but Denison rallied late and won, 27-25.
Leading the way in kills for the Tricolor was Liana Petitti with 12. The next best was Lexi Evak with ten and Grace Porter added eight of her own.
Two Berg players were in double digits in the assists category. Julianna Pena had 23 while Kelsey Custenborder notched 19.
Nicole Thomas (15) and Custenborder (17) each put up double-digit digs on the night.
Heidelberg will be back in action on Friday as they will travel to Bloomington, IL and take on UW-Whitewater. The match is set for 5:30 p.m.
