TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team picked up its first OAC win of the season in a doubleheader split with Otterbein University on a brisk Saturday in Peaceful Valley. Heidelberg won the opener, 7-5, but fell in the night cap, 13-8.
Heidelberg moved to 8-11 overall, 1-3 in the OAC. Otterbein is 14-6, 3-1.
GAME ONE: BERG 7-9-0 OTTERBEIN 5-8-2
In the bottom of the second,
Adam McVicker led off with a double down the right field line and remained at second when
Deaunte Fleming reached on an error. With one out,
Thomas Sauer launched his second home run of the season -- a three-run blast to left center. The next batter,
Memphis Cutshall followed with a solo shot down the line in left. Heidelberg led 4-0.
The next inning, the Student Princes tacked on another run.
Keaton Mark singled, then stole second and third.
Deaunte Fleming bounced a two-out single up the middle, scoring Mark.
Berg starter
Ross Thompson did not allow a hit until the top of the sixth inning. A lead-off single, a balk, and a slow bouncer through the infield plated the first run for Otterbein. The Cardinals had three hits in the inning, but a pop up and a 5-3 double play limited the visitors to just the one run. Otterbein added another in the top of the seventh.
Heidelberg added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Seth Scoville had an RBI double and scored on a base hit by Sauer.
Thompson worked into the ninth, but was unable to get the final out. The visitors scored three times and had the tying run at the plate. Reliever
Ridge Clark came on and struck out Ryan Grant to end the game, earning his first save of the season.
GAME TWO: OTTERBEIN 13-12-1 BERG 8-11-4
Otterbein came out swinging in the night cap, plating seven runs on five hits.
Heidelberg chipped away in the home half of the first. DeVore walked and moved to third on a double by Mark. The pair scored on a base hit to right by McVicker.
The 'Berg momentum was short-lived. Otterbein scored twice in the second, then added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth.
Ignited by a one-out solo homer from
Camden Farley, Heidelberg scored three in the bottom of the sixth. DeVore walked and scored from first on a double down the left field line by Mark. Mark scored on an infield single by Fleming.
Down 13-5, DeVore blasted a three-run homer in the ninth.
UP NEXT:
Heidelberg was slated to play Anderson on Sunday, but the Ravens have a conference game to make up. Instead, Heidelberg hosts Oberlin on Tuesday. First pitch with the Yeomen is scheduled for 4 p.m.
