AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University baseball team thrived under the warm Florida sun, pummeling Rhode Island College, 14-1, in seven innings. After struggling offensively last weekend, the Student Princes pounded out 14 hits, including homers by
Keaton Mark and
Zane Mirgon in the second inning.
Heidelberg improved to 1-2 on the season. Rhode Island slipped to 0-2.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, Fleming stroked a double to left that drove in three. He finished with three hits on the day, tying his career high.
In the second, Heidelberg exploded for six runs.
Sam Runyan and
Robert Hunt singled before Mark launched his second home run of the campaign, a three-run shot down the line in left. With the bases empty,
Eric DeVore and
Adam McVicker reignited the offense with singles. As McVicker stole second, an error allowed DeVore to score. Moments later, Mirgon blasted a home run to left.
McVicker drove in another run with a ground out in the third, putting HU up 10-0. Mirgon added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Berg added three in the sixth.
Seth Scoville, who reached on an error, scored the first of the frame on a passed ball.
Aidan Corrigan scampered home on an RBI ground out by Mark. DeVore drove in Hunt with a base hit to left.
While the bats pounded away, 'Berg starter
Ross Thompson (1-1) was sharp. He allowed one run on six hits in six full innings of work, fanning five.
Payton Moser made his collegiate debut, striking out two in a perfect inning of relief.
Heidelberg got after it on the basepaths, swiping 10 bases on the day.
The Berg faces Swarthmore at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Garnet, which did not play in 2021, is 2-3 on the season.
