PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University baseball team avenged Wednesday's loss to Lebanon Valley College in a big way, dismantling the Dutchmen, 18-3. Heidelberg did their damage with 12 hits, seven walks, seven hit batsmen, and six Dutchman errors.
Heidelberg, now 5-4 on the season, wraps up the yearly pilgrimage to Southwest Florida on Saturday before heading home to see their new turf infield.
Robert Hunt led off the game by slapping a double down the left field line. He scored on a fielder's choice by
Adam McVicker.
In the third, Hunt and
Keaton Mark started the frame with walks.
Eric DeVore followed with a single through the right side of the infield that scored Hunt. Ground balls off the bats of McVicker and
Deaunte Fleming brought in two more runs for HU, which led 4-0.
Lebanon Valley (5-5) closed the gap in the bottom of the third, scoring three unearned runs.
Heidelberg put up eight in the top of the fourth -- but only two of the runs were driven in by hits. Hunt and DeVore had the RBI singles. Four runs scored via errors, two on wild pitches, and one on a balk.
With the bases loaded in the seventh,
Aidan Corrigan was hit with a pitch to drive in Heidlberg's 13th run.
Head Coach
Chad Fitzgerald called on reserves late in the contest, and the non-starters played well. In the ninth, HU tacked on five more runs.
Cayden Rollins had an RBI single,
Andrew Pokley drew a bases-loaded walk, and
Memphis Cutshall hit a two-run double. Hunt closed the scoring with an infield single that drove in
Reese Kuhns.
Lost in the shuffle was another strong start from
Brady Knizner. Knizner threw seven full innings, allowing three unearned runs and striking out one.
Zane Mirgon and
Jackson Armbrecht each threw an inning of scoreless relief.
DeVore finished with four hits and two RBI. Hunt had three hits on the day.
The trip concludes with an 11 a.m. game against Arcadia on Saturday.
