WBB Season ends in Tournament

NEW CONCORD -- The Heidelberg University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2021-22 season with a 56-40 loss to Muskingum in the opening round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.  The Muskies got out to a sizable lead early and withstood a third-quarter surge from the Student Princes.

Alyssa Martin demolished her career high in rebounding, grabbing 15 caroms on the night.  Hallie Rogers (13) and Bailey Walter (11) were the only Student Princes to reach double figures.

Points were hard to come by in the first half as both teams struggled to find their range.  Muskingum led 19-9 after the first quarter, but Heidelberg held a slight edge in the second.  The hosts went into halftime ahead 21-15.

Heidelberg found success at the foul line in the third quarter, hitting 10 from the stripe in the third.  The Student Princes were able to whittle the deficit down to two with 4:34 left in the frame.  The Muskies, though, closed the period on an 11-5 run and led 40-31.

Muskingum shot 48.3% from the floor in the second half and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The Student Princes took excellent care of the basketball -- committing a season-low nine turnovers.  The Tricolor went 0-10 from long range and shot 21.1 percent from the floor.

Rogers had five steals on the evening.  Martin tallied seven points.

The Muskies advance to face No. 2 seed Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday.

The youthful Student Princes finished the year with three wins, but gained a wealth of experience that will vault the squad forward in the 2022-23 season.
