TIFFIN – Unable to stop the Muskies on defense, the Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell short, leading to a 58-43 loss.
Elisha Carter led the way with a career-high 18 points.
Alyssa Martin got her name in the book early, contributing four of the first nine points. Midway through the first, Carter had a clean step-back jumper for a 9-4 lead. A jumper from
Cheyanne Bean topped off the first with an 11-9 'Berg advantage.
A 3-pointer from Carter started out the second quarter. Unfortunately, the visitors (4-6, 1-3 OAC) would go on a 16-1 run forcing Heidelberg (2-8, 0-4 OAC) into a timeout with 1:38 remaining. With eight seconds left,
Sequoia Bradley found Carter for a deep three to send them into halftime down 27-18.
In the third, with nearly every shot that Muskingum made, Carter had a response. Backed by two 3-pointers, the visitors outscored the home team 12-10. Of those ten points, Carter contributed eight.
Morgan Altenburger also added two free throws.
In the fourth, a block by Altenburger took the ball to the other end where Carter worked her way to three more. With five minutes left in the game, Bradley added a layup of her own. Later,
Navia Smith added two from the charity stripe, for a 51-41 deficit. Martin found another layup, but Muskingum added two free throws to close it out 58-43.
Bradley and Martin each finished with six points. Heidelberg outrebounded Muskingum 32-27 – nine from Bean and eight from Martin.
Heidelberg will be back in Seiberling Gymnasium on Tuesday as they face Alma for a rare 2 p.m. midweek tip-off.
